The commanding position, explained with geometry

The commanding position is the most repeated bed rule in Feng Shui. It has two halves that pull in opposite directions: you should see the door from the pillow, but you should not be in line with it. The sweet spot is usually diagonally across from the door, with the headboard on a solid wall.

1. The door line

We project a strip from the doorway into the room, as wide as the door. If any part of the bed lies inside it, the check turns to review. If the foot of the bed points straight out of the door — sometimes called the “coffin position” — it is marked as a priority, because it is the placement most practitioners would change first.

2. View from the pillow

We draw a sight line from the pillow to the door and check two things: that the door is within a natural field of view, and that no tall furniture blocks it.

3. Backing

The headboard edge should meet a wall. When you drag the bed near a wall it snaps flush, so this check is quick to satisfy. A window directly behind the headboard is flagged separately.

Questions

What is the commanding position for a bed?+

A bed position where you can see the bedroom door from the pillow without lying directly in line with it — typically diagonal from the door, with the headboard against a solid wall.

Why is “feet toward the door” avoided?+

Traditionally it is associated with how the deceased were carried out feet first, and with lying in the path where energy enters the room. It is a cultural guideline rather than a claim about outcomes.

What if my bed has to face the door?+

Mark the check as reviewed and consider a footboard, bench or rug at the foot of the bed — common traditional ways to soften the direct line.

Does the side of the bed matter?+

For couples, practitioners sometimes prefer both sides to be accessible. This room focuses on the relationships that apply to any bed: door, backing and view.
